How Long Does It Take to Design and Build a Business Website?

“How long will it take?” is usually the second question after price. The honest answer depends less on software and more on content readiness, decision speed and how clearly the outcome is defined.

Typical ranges for common projects

A focused one-page site can move quickly when copy and images are ready. A small business website with a handful of pages usually needs longer for structure, design and feedback. Booking, ecommerce and portals add operational decisions that should not be rushed.

Treat these as planning ranges, not promises: the schedule should be written into the quotation once scope is fixed.

  • Starter / one page: often around 1–2 weeks once content is available
  • Business website: commonly 3–6 weeks
  • Growth or portfolio sites: often 4–8 weeks
  • Booking or ecommerce: frequently 6–10+ weeks depending on integrations
  • Portals and web apps: phased — a useful first release may take several weeks to a few months

What actually controls the calendar

Most delays are not technical. They come from unfinished copy, missing photography, slow feedback, stakeholder disagreement or new requirements arriving mid-build.

A studio can protect time with clear stages and review windows. The client protects time by nominating one decision-maker and preparing content early.

A sensible stage order

Strong projects usually move through discovery and structure, design direction, build, content placement, testing and launch. Skipping structure to “get into design” often creates rework later.

You should see the work develop in stages rather than waiting for a single reveal. That keeps surprises small and feedback useful.

Why fixed scope makes timelines believable

A timeline attached to an open brief is theatre. A timeline attached to a fixed quotation is a planning tool. If the scope changes, the schedule should change with it — in writing.

That is also why estimate tools and discovery conversations matter: they reduce the chance of discovering the real project halfway through week three.
